Springless trampolines, as their name implies, do not use metal coil springs in their construction. Typically they employ either reinforced elastic bands or flexible fiberglass rods to deliver the bounce, rather than springs.
The typical safety enclosure of a springless trampoline is also a nice feature. Instead of hard steel posts, it is made of strong netting and sturdy, flexible posts. In the event of a fall, the enclosure guides the user back toward the center of the mat, rather than onto springs or other hard surfaces.
Because of the materials involved in construction, a springless trampoline will generally hold up better in all kinds of weather. Since there are no metal springs, you won't have to worry about rust or corrosion.
Some reports from consumers, as well as research studies, indicate that a springless trampoline just doesn’t have the same bounce as a traditional trampoline with springs. Users must work harder to bounce, and generally still will not bounce as high.
While springless trampolines are generally considered to be much safer than their traditional counterparts, there are some potential hazards that need to be mentioned. Due to the unique design of the mat, the entire jump surface rotates each time the user lands. Some people have suffered knee pain and even lingering injury because of this twisting motion.
Another safety concern unique to springless trampolines involves their particular type of safety enclosure. These enclosures are designed with flexible rods, rather than steel posts, which pitch the user back toward the center of the trampoline. But in the process of doing so, the user may first wind up leaning way out to the side in the netting, posing a potential danger to those standing near the trampoline waiting their turn.
Under normal conditions and with typical use, the benefits and safety features of a springless trampoline greatly outweigh the potential dangers. You will need to do your homework and decide for yourself which design is best for you and your family.
While still not as popular or readily available as traditional trampolines, you can find a few brands that feature springless trampolines. Springfree trampolines are the original designer and manufacturer of the fiberglass rod variety, and other brands such as AirZone and Bravo Sport offer trampolines featuring elastic bands.
