Generally speaking, all traditional trampolines have the same basic parts: the frame, the springs, and the mat. While the quality and materials for these parts may vary according to the brand or manufacturer, their purposes remain the same.
A good sturdy frame is essential to the safety and lifespan of a trampoline. Frames are generally either galvanized steel or plastic, with plastic being mostly reserved for small child-friendly trampolines. There is no one shape for all frames; some may have three U-shaped legs with the bottom piece resting on the ground, some may have four legs, and some may even have W-shaped legs that are said to be safer and more stable.
Alternatively, a few brands now feature springless trampolines. As the name implies, these trampolines do not use springs to deliver the bounce, rather they use either flexible fiberglass rods or elastic bands. If rods are used, they are positioned under the mat, out of the way of the user. Bands are usually positioned similarly to springs, and may be under a padded cover.
The trampoline mat is the jumping surface, made of very strong, high density woven fabric (usually polypropylene). A good mat will be porous, to allow for air passage and better bounce, UV-protected, to prevent sun damage, and resistant to mold and mildew. It should also hold up well to flex and stress, without stretching.
Optional parts include such niceties as a safety enclosure and a trampoline cover. An enclosure is usually made of strong padded rods connected to the frame and surrounded by flexible netting. The purpose of the enclosure is to keep the jumper from falling off the trampoline and suffering injury. A trampoline cover is nice to have, as it keeps the mat clean and protected from the elements.
Like any product out there, a trampoline is only as good as its individual parts. When shopping for a new trampoline, do your research and make sure you know how each part works to make your jumping experience safer and more enjoyable.
